SoD4 Game Log

4th Edition Sea of Dust Game Log

This is a place where I (the DM) can try to keep track of what's been done. I'm hoping to not include any spoilers, as I intend this to be a place to look back for ideas, events, or just notes. The real work will still happen in that nasty Blue Binder of Campaign Creation +4!! (Just wait till I get another black one! Then it's +5!!)

Session One

(8 Coldeven - 9 Coldeven)

The adventurers head toward the town of Winterhaven where they are attacked by a band of Kobolds. After dispatching the pesky beasts, the group arrives in the town and heads to the inn. Once they've eaten and catch their breath, the party members start hunting information that may help them on their quests

Session Two

(9 Coldeven - 12 Coldeven)

Our heroes spend a couple more days in Winterhaven gathering information and meeting the locals. Good information comes from an unusual source when Millinia runs across the path of young Elven flower girl in the market square. Bharanaar and Iados roam the town getting an idea of what the locals think of their presence. Aramis manages to not get into any more trouble while feeling out (or is that up?!) the villagers. Millinia meets with Lord Padraig and accepts the quest to rid the village of the kobold raiders. After a couple days, the adventurers set out to rescue Douven. The group is ambushed by kobolds looking for vengence for having their kinsmen killed just a few days ago. The group was suprised when they reached the Dragon's Tomb (or Trash Heap, as it is affectionately known in Winterhaven) to not find the kobolds they had heard tale of, but a band of Humans led by a Gnome and trailing a couple guardian drakes. Disturbing information of someone called Kalarel and some ritual that would turn the region into a playground for demons led the party to set up a very successful ambush of the bandits. In the aftermath of the battle, the heroes discover that Douven is here, and get him untied. At session's end, the party was taking a short rest to recoup from the fight, and getting ready to talk with Douven.

Session Three

(12 Coldeven - 14 Coldeven)

Having killed Douven's captors, the weary band brings the lost explorer back to Winterhaven. Aramis takes his leave to return to Nenlast and the Lady he is already in so much trouble for wooing. Baranaar takes his leave as well. Quel'Aramereth finds his way to Valthrun's tower where he studies up on some local history. Yulef and Caelynna find their way to Winterhaven. Millinia and Iados gather information around and invite the newcomers into the party.

Session Four

(14 Coldeven - 14 Coldeven)

Caelynna stays in Winterhaven as Lord Padraig has a mission for her. The party sets out to find the Kobold lair and rid the area of the pesky bandits. They find the lair with no trouble and battle their way inside. In the lair, a furious fight ensues. Aramis and Bharanaar make an appearance to keep the party from having all the fun by themselves, and make a hefty contribution to the battle. Irontooth, the goblin leader of the kobold camp, fights for his life, crying out, "Kalarel! Lord Orcus! Prepare my way!" as he falls lifeless to the ground.

Session Five

(15 Coldeven - 17 Coldeven)

The party returns to Winterhaven where they rest up from the rigors of the road. The towns people are strangely quiet, and this causes some unrest among the group. The party finds that the cause of the ill ease of the villagers is that a death cult member was discovered in town, though she was able to escape the guards. Lord Padraig publicly rewarded the group for ridding the region of the kobold threat. The party gained a name (Defenders of the Vale). Iados, Bharanaar, and Aramis (again) take their leave. Keyleth, an old friend of Millinia, joins the Defenders.

Session Six

After being celebrated, the heroes depart to begin exploring the Keep. After combing the ruins from evidence for what's going on, The Defenders delve into the underground halls. They get resistance from goblins inside the dungeon, but are able to quicky clear an area of the entrance level.

A band of powerful adventurers (See Sod Game log) discovers that yet another interplanar terror threatens the Sea of Dust. They set out to reach the Nintir Vale before the leaders of the Orcus Death Cult can deliver the much needed portal scrolls to their agent in the Shadowfell keep.

Session Ten (Meanwhile, somewhere else….)

(16 Coldeven - 19 Coldeven)

After dispatching the first of the Orcus Deathpriests, the party gets control of a piece of the Portal Scroll. Lyradil gets possessed by the scroll and chaos ensues. The party figures out what is going on and is able to help Lyradil in time to stop the second Deathpriest and recover the second piece of the Scroll.

Session Eleven

(19 Coldeven - 20 Coldeven)

Aramis hires a newcomer to send a message to the Defenders, a Suhal Warlock named Nobody, to inform the group that their parents were recently involved in local events. The party gives a pass on a room containing "nasty water", and instead finds nasty dead things.

Session Twelve

(20 Coldeven - 20 Coldeven)

The Defenders of the Vale continue their foray into the Keep. They carve their way through an almost endless swarm of skeletal baddies where they discover - again - the advantages of having a Warlock in the party, and Splug gets to experiment with his newly learned talents. The group then encounters Sir Keegan, the once great Captain of the Keep who grills the party with questions to insure their intentions in the Keep are along the lines with his former mission. After a brief lament, Sir Keegan gives the group Aecris, his magical sword that was gifted to him for the task of keeping the Rift sealed.

Session Thirteen

(20 Coldeven - 21 Coldeven)

The Defenders of the Vale return to Winterhaven where they find the gates sealed, and Lord Padraig leading the watch on among the battlements. They are told that the dead have started to rise from their graves in the graveyard to the south, and questionsed about their affliations, namely, Splug. the party goes into town to resupply and heads south to resolve the issue of walking dead. While battling with Ninarain and the undead horde, a Ranger and Cleric heading north from the woods hear the sounds of battle and join in while Nobody makes sure the magic circle that is spawning undead minions is dealt with.

Session Fourteen

(21 Coldeven - 22 Coldeven)

Having battled undead critters, the newcomers and the Defenders get those pesky introductions out of the way and head to town. After a few drinks and some information gathering by the Rogue, the group heads back into the dark of the dungeons beneath Shadowfell Keep. The party splits up so that Nobody and Myrna can investigate the Nasty Water room. They find a particularly nasty blob of blue slime that takes a good long while to dispatch, and not without a serious loss.

Session Fifteen

(22 Coldeven - 2 Planting)

The battered heroes return to Winterhaven where they bring Quel' to the temple and have his life restored. Quel' decides to take some time to rest after his ordeal, and Bharanaar returns. The party heads back to the Keep (after a week of resting and retraining) and makes their way to the stairs that lead down to the next level of the Keep and closer to Kalarel. A furious battle is fought at the base of the stairs where some Bloodreaver Hobgoblins were stationed.

The Defenders of the Vale continue deeper into the second underground floor of the keep. Moving stealthily through the halls, Keyleth set off a trap that alerted the Hobgoblins in the area of the party's presence. The hobgoblins attacked and were quickly cut down.

The party, having exhausted their resources in the ambush, returns to Winterhaven where they gather information about other places adventure can be found in the Vale, as well dropping off Myrna, Bharanaar, and Splug. Upon returning to the Keep, the party finds themselves in a room full of traps which nearly cost Keyleth her life.

The Defenders of the Vale continue into the dungeons below the Keep, fighting off a small horde of Zombies before reaching another large stairwell. Down the stairs, the group finds an underpriest discussing something with some strange looking humanoids. The group gets themselves into position and attack!

Session Nineteen

(4 Planting - 5 Planting)

Bharanaar returns to the Keep with grave news about retaliation attacks of undead creatures against Winterhaven by Kalarel. Nobody lowers himself into the main temple chamber, where Kalarel was waiting with a strength draining magical bolt. The Defenders backtrack a bit to battle the Abyssal flavor of Jello and rest up before trying to take on the Deathpriest. The party returns to the temple chamber, where their acrobatic charges give them an early upper hand. Kalarel was up to the challenge, though, and the group was soon fighting for survival. The Defenders of the Vale won out at the end, and Kalarel was dragged into an open portal to the Shadowfell. Not long afterward, however, an intimidating humanlike creature stepped through the portal and glared at the party…

Session Twenty

(5 Planting - 8 Planting)

Palaetshi discovers the party's intentions, and they discover hers. The Defenders head back toward Winterhaven and find the villagers cleaning up after the zombie attacks and Lord Padraig mustering the militia. The group sets the town to ease again, deliver Kalarel's staff, and find out that the members of the group that were in Winterhaven have departed for Fallcrest to investigate a similar portal to the one they were just closing in the Keep. The Defenders get their affairs in Winterhaven settled and head toward Fallcrest. On the morning of the second day of travel, they party was "ambushed" by a lone troll marauder just before leaving the Gardbury Downs. They arrived in Fallcrest late into the night where they found lodging. In the morning, Nobody went looking for Aramis and the others while Bharanaar delivered the map of the Keep to Parle. Upon discovering that the others had gone to Thunderspire Peak, the group set out to find them.

Session Twenty-One

(8 Planting - 9 Planting)

The Defenders enter the ancient city of Saruun Khel and make their way through the labyrinth where they overhear slavers trying to capture a rowdy halfling. The party steps in and gets Rendil out of trouble, also taking a prisoner - a Hobgoblin who surrendered his flail when his companions fell. Rendil offers to get them drinks and rooms at the Halfmoon Inn, and the group heads toward the Seven Pillared Hall. On the way, the Hobgoblin feels the need to check in with his superiors, and the party insists on going with him (with the exception of Yulef and Rendil). A fight starts and very quickly there appear two black robed wizards with expressionless golden masks. The Defenders fight furiously, and would have been able to hold their own against the Hobgoblin's superiors, but with the wizards indiscriminitely casting into the fray, there was little hope for a good outcome. Nobody manages to escape with an unconscious Aramil, and the others fall to the might of the Wizards of Saruun. Nobody makes it to the Inn where Rendil rushes to get a potion to revive Aramil. Palaetshi awakens to gruff voices discussing what should be done with the bodies of the adventurers. It is decided that they should be brought out into the labyrinth, and Palaetshi plays dead long enough to be dropped off with her unconscious companions. After binding their wounds and resting for a long while, they are able to make their way back into the Seven Pillared Hall. The Defenders regroup at the Inn and get advice about how not to anger the wizards that rule this place in fear and might.

The Defenders get their asses handed to them after a REALLY bad judgement call, Nobody meets Gendar and discusses a deal to get a pact blade, Millie begins rethinking her career path!

Session Twenty-Two

(9 Planting - 10 Planting)

The Defenders of the Vale begin gathering information about the Seven Pillared Hall and stop by the Curious Goods shop owned by Gendar. After looking around and not finding anything of value, the group begins to talk with the Elf about merchandise and pricing. Gendar's shop turns out to be just as strange as the Elf himself, and the prices are well beyond outrageous, but Gendar is willing to bargain to offer discounts on many items. While in the shop, a Tiefling enters and Nobody strikes up a conversation which leads to Ceridwen tentatively signing up. Aramil finds out about the Bloodreavers' hideout, and since it's on the way to finding a wild dog asked for by Gendar, he has Rendil lead the way. Interupting the begining of the trip, Orontar asks the Party for information about Paldemar, a missing wizard from the Order. Upon arriving at the Chamber of Eyes, the Defenders bribe their way through the first double door and in a sweeping flank from the door and the balcony, the party cuts down the first of the Bloodreavers' guards.

Session Twenty-Three

(10 Planting - 10 Planting)

The Defenders battle their way deeper into the Chamber of Eyes and eventually face off against Krand, their leader. A couple of prisoners, Ievara and Grarsharin, are rescued and join up with the group. The party discovers that the Riverdown slaves have already been sold by the Bloodreavers. Seems that the Grimmerzuhl Duergar are the buyers…

Session Twenty-Four

(10 Planting - 10 Planting)

The party returns to the Seven-Pillared Hall, with Aramil checking for hyena tracks the whole way. Ievara and Grarsharin, along with Aramil, pay a visit to Gender who is still very eager to make deals with the party. Yulef talks up folks in the Halfmoon Inn and discovers not only Dreskin, a short and round human who runs another provision shop in the Hall, but also finds out about Rothar's Taproom, the drinking hole for those less goodly races who inhabit or visit the Hall. Gendar tells the party of the Horned Hold and the Well of Demons.

The party sets out from the Seven-Pillared Hall to find the Horned Hold. After wandering the labyrinth for a while, they reach their destination. A battle with some orcs and an ogre gets them into the Hold.

Session Twenty-Six

(10 Planting - 10 Planting)

The party, now in the Horned Hold, cautiously venture from the voyer and find a few of the dezinens of the Hold seem to be ready to defend the place. Picking what seemed to be a less prepared chamber, the party find where the Riverdown slaves are being kept, and their guardians as well. After an exciting battle, and with few slave casulties, the party has to decide whether to bring the common folk to safety or to explore more before returning.

Session Twenty-Seven

(10 Planting - 10 Planting)

The party finds the key to the manacles holding the Riverdown folk and chain the Duergar prisoner. Palaetshi and Aramil escort the people and captive back to the Seven-Pillared Hall while the others explore a bit more of the Hold. They try to trick their way into Murklemore's chamber, but the crafty leader of the Horned Hold's residents wasn't falling for it. A tremendous battle began and the party pushed themselves to their limits attempting to bring down the Duergar leader and his cohorts. Murklemore ended up escaping with only his life and the party begins a much needed rest.

Session Twenty-Eight

(10 Planting - 10 Planting)

The party, weary from the hard battle with Murklemore, begin getting ready to get some rest. Bharanaar heads into the labyrinth to go get the others. Palaetshi and Aramil make their way through the maze with the rescued Riverdown folk (who mention that two of their number have been sold off to Gnolls), but not before they are attacked by a pack of hyenas. After subdueing the wild hunt, Aramil and Palaetshi bind the animals and meet up with Bharanaar who offers to bring the people back to the Seven-Pillared Hall. They decline, and the three head toward the Hall together. Back in the Horned Hold, Ievara, Merric and Grarsharin are interupted in their attempt to recouperate from the day's vigors; Murklemore has rallied his forces and ambushes the heroes through a secret door behind the fireplace. Badly outnumbered and weary from the last battle with the defenders of the Hold, the heroes flee the battle, with Ievara leaving the others to their own devices in the Hold. Grarsharin and Merric find a safe place to hide.

Merric and Grarsharin sneak their way out of the Horned Hold. Newcomers to the region find their way to the Seven-Pillared Hall where they meet up with Palaetshi and Aramil. A bit of chatter ad common ideas gains the newcomers entrance into the party.

The party heads back to the Horned Hold where they find the door barred against intrusion. Grarcharin intrudes anyway, chopping the door down with great axe! Upon gaining entry, they find that Duergar are (of course) ready and waiting. The dark dwarves put the newest members to the test, and though there were a couple of close calls, the party - for the third time - cuts an entryway into the Hold.

After clearing out the entrance room again, the party ventures once more to Murklemore's chamber, where the leader of the Duergar is ready for the intrusion, along with a couple guards. The fight is furious, but this time Murklemore is unable to escape and is finally cut down.

Session Thirty-Two

(11 Planting - 11 Planting)

With Murklemore dead, the party gets more ambitious about exploring the Horned Hold. They move into the eastern reach of the tower where a few Duergar lackeys lead by a theurge try to stop the group's forward momentum into the rest of the Hold, but the party quickly dispatches them, even chasing the fleeing theurge out onto a bridge connecting the western tower to the northern one and flinging him to his death in the chasm below. After a short rest, the group seals a few doors leading into the western tower and find the remnants of centuries old grave robbers that had been trapped in the crypts long ago. Another quick battle was fought, and the party is ready to explore the rest of the fortress complex.

The party pushes forward quickly into the Northern Tower of the Horned Hold. In a matter of moments, the tower is cleared of its occupants and scoured for treasures.

The adventurers make their way to the southern tower of the Horned Hold where they find some people from Fallcrest who served as the Duergar's kitchen slaves. After convincing them the way was safe, the group heads back to the Seven-Pillared Hall. A brief stop by the Grimmerzhul Trading Post to goad the remaining Duergar into a fight proves uneffective, so the party goes to talk with Gendar. After a little while in town, the party discovers that their presence is requested for a strange meeting not far from the Hall.

The band of heroes meets with the Tieflings in a chamber near the Seven-Pillared Hall. A fight inevitably breaks out, and the adventurers are able to retrieve a Command Amulet in hopes of possibly trading with Gendar (or figuring out how to operate a Bronze Warder!). Orontar ends up taking the amulet, but has mentioned repaying the heroes for their deeds.

Session Thirty-Six

(12 Planting - 13 Planting)

The heroes return to the Hall and rest of up from their trip to Ambush Cave. Orontar meets them the next morning and asks for an item they possess in order to "Make a Deal" and gather up payment that he sees is proper for such a deed as returning the Warder and insuring the adventurers will come to him about others they may find. The party goes through the information they have obtained and figure the next stop should be the Well of Demons. They launch an expedition into the Well, where they encounter a few guardians, but these pose little real threat to our heroes.

Having made their way to the Well of Demons, the party begins exploring a bit more. Agis, an Elven monk, joins them in the first room of the Well. They cut through some of the Blackfangs and their hyenas, as well as discovering a bit more about the ancient minotaur city. In what appears to be an old monastary in the Well, the party rescues a dire boar from being target practice. Oddly enough, the boar has a familiar mark branded on its flank, the mark of the Deepgem Mining Company.

Session Thirty-Eight

(13 Planting - 13 Planting)

While resting up after the battle, Croi remembers that Ulthand, the leader of the Deepgem Company, had been asking any Dwarf returning from the mines about his pet Halthor, a boar that must be large enough to ride. Figuring this must be the boar, the party endeavors to get it home alive. A bit more exploration into the Well leads the group to series of small chambers where they find a couple Tieflings who seem anxious to not be there. A battle with a Gnoll priestess and her "pet" demon ensues, and the party makes short work of them. After locking the Tieflings in the priestess' chamber (to keep them from getting into any more trouble), the party ventures farther into the Well and comes across an odd chamber where the floor is stained by what once was pools of blood. From the bloodstains rise three spectral figures who raise their hands as a sign to stop the heroes…

The Spire Wolves (as the party is now known) are put in a tough spot, having to prove their worth to the spirits to gain precious information about what may await them in the rest of the Well of Demons. Though not completely successful, the Wolves are able to gain quite a few tips and clues from the ghosts. The party then sets out to explore the area.

The Spire Wolves begin to head back toward the Seven-Pillared Hall when they are chastised by the ghosts who tell them that a ritual is under way that will kill the very slaves they have come to save. The Wolves gather their wits and begin gathering the rest of the items they need to open the sealed door to the Inner Sanctum.

The party continues their aquisition of the relics they need to open the door to the Inner Sanctum. A room full of mirrors that teleported, drained, and trapped the Spire Wolves proved to be tough, but Croi was able to get the Mask, free his companions, and get them out of harm's way.

Session Forty-Two

(13 Planting - 13 Planting)

The Spire Wolves, having gathered all the relics needed to open the door to the Inner Sanctum as well as having had a discussion on how the items should be placed ("Is that 3, 2, 1 and then drop, or 3, 2, and then drop on 1?"), begin the trial of the Proving Grounds. Traps in every chamber begin harrying the adventurers and a green dragon rises up out of a pit in the central room. The party manages to keep the dragon pinned in the room and keep clear of the huge ball of elemental chaos that rolls around the track outside the chamber. After bravely battling and slaying the dragon, the Wolves approach the doorway to the Inner Sanctum. Upon catching their breath and entering the Sanctum, the party is assaulted by the minions of Maldrick, the demonic leader of the Blackfang Gnolls. A vicious battle ensues during which Aramil frees an ensorcelled slave only to end up stuck in the runic circle he released the poor Human from and half the party ended up unconcious on the floor. Autumn's area effect magics, Palaetshi's quick blades, and Croi's spirit guided attacks managed to clear the lower floor of demonic creatures. Agis was able to pull Aramil from the runic circle before he was knocked out of the fight. With no minions left to keep the adventurers at bay, and having failed to complete the ritual, Maldrick thought it best to flee, but with Aramil revived, Croi's dire wolf in the doorway, and Autumn's transformation into a war hound, the Gnoll was unable to escape.

Session Forty-Three

(13 Planting - 14 Planting)

The Spire Wolves return to the Seven-Pillared Hall to get some rest. Agis goes with Croi to the Deepgems where Croi drops off Halthor, and Agis drops off himself. The evening of their arrival brings them to the Inn where they meet up with Adol the Oathkeeper, a Dragonborn Paladin who at first finds it hard to figuire out how the group became heroes. Adol had a brief battle with Gendar (who had a buyer for the maul Dietrick had been carrying), and a sparring match with Dietrick, which gave the group and the Paladin a sense of each others' worth. The next morning, a blast that shook the whole of the Hall seemed to be the signal that the Ordinator Arcanis was "busy", and the Wolves stormed the Grimmerzhul Trading Post. Shortly after the battle began, it became apparent who the buyer of the maul was - Murklemore had been raised from the dead! The Wolves were taking no chances this time, and used every trick in the book to bring the Duergar down, and quickly!

Session Forty-Four

(14 Planting - 15 Planting)

After battling Murklemore (again!) and his buddies, the party heads back to Gendar's to sell off some loot. After a rest, the Spire Wolves head into the labyrinth, following the pull of the silver key they found on Maldrick. It led them to the Road of Lanterns and then to an unadorned section of wall. The key leapt from Aramil's hand and revealed a secret door. Behind the door was a short hallway that lead to a chamber with a magical circle on the floor. In a burst of purple flame, a firey face appeared and challenged the party to share secrets with it, the harder to obtain, the better. The adventurers succeeded at gaining entrance and upon entering the Tower of Mysteries, found themselves battling some unusual goblinoids and a pair of horrific Shadar-Kai.

Session Forty-Five

(15 Planting - 15 Planting)

Set on their mission to end the threat of the Tower of Mysteries, the Spire Wolves use the teleporter runes to reach the second level of the Tower. There, they find some Enigmas and their Norker lackeys working on some sort of of experiment. Not willing to let the process be seen through, the party attacks. The creatures tried to rally their defences, including a Bronze Warder, but were unable to halt the Wolves' forward momentum. Once the chambers were cleared and searched, the adventurers headed up to Paldemar's level at the top of the Tower. Paldemar, alerted to the party's presence when they smashed a machine he had built to gain control of a number of Warders, was waiting for the group with a small army of Enigmas, Norkers, and another Warder. The Spire Wolves fought through the fray, expending all their resources and laying low the minions of Paldemar. The Wizard himself, however, took flight when he realized the party had already undone all his hard work.

Having spoiled the Wizard's plans, the party searches for loot (finding a neat map among other things) and returns to the Seven-Pillared Hall. There they discover the "city" in a state of upheaval; it seems the minotaurs have returned. Gendar seemed to take it with usual flippancy, while the other business owners wonder what is to come. The party interacts with one of the minotaurs to get an idea of what's to come (maybe a show-down between Wizard and Bovine kind?). Orontar is pleased with the Wolves crushing the Paldemar rebellion and pays the party for their efforts.

Session Forty-Eight

(24 Planting - 25 Planting)

The Spire Wolves gather in the Halfmoon Inn for breakfast and preparation for their journey. Autumn and Onix take their leave and Sage and Mugee are enlisted into the party. The Wolves leave the Thunderspire and travel to Fallcrest. The town is given the once-over and the party branches out to find places to sleep. In the morning, they gather at the Silver Unicorn Inn where they meet an Eladrin looking for traveled folks to ask about a place he is interested in. He inquires about a pyramid that is out of place in the Harken Forest to the south. Comparing notes, the Wolves come to realize he is asking about the place they are going. The party is able to find out that another adventuring group in the area is interested in the pyramid and seems to have some experience with closing portals that are appearing or activating in the region.

Session Forty-Nine

(25 Planting - 26 Planting)

The Spire Wolves continue their conversation with the Eladrin, giving him information that he feels "…will save us all." The chat is interrupted by militiamen looking for a bandit, Garash Vren, who recently escaped the town jail. The Eladrin soon takes his leave and, shortly after that, Sergeant Murgeddin approaches the party for information on Vren and offers a reward for the return of his head. The Wolves head south, after purchasing some horses, tracking the bandit. They discover a campsite not far from the King's Road where someone camped after a fierce battle with a raiding party of Goblinoids. They find the trail they're looking for and continue into the Harken, just a couple hours behind Vren. Their way is impeded by an angered group of Dryads who calm after finding the party is not in league with the torch wielding trouble-maker they are tracking. The Wolves back-track to the path, gather their horses, and finally stop for rest at Kalton Manor. In the morning, they follow a trail south toward the Place of Power they have heard mention of (and where they think Vren is headed). They pause when sounds from the undergrowth become louder and a wounded Half Elvish bard stumbles onto the trail. He is being chased by a number of Fey creatures and their pet spiders and a heated battle leaves the party gasping for breath and the bard dead. They find his journal, however, and are able to discover that a large group of heroes have set out for the Place of Power ahead of them, and have met a grim fate.
